Fencing is a both a martial art as well as a competitive combat sport that involves two opponents using swords—foil, épée, or sabre—in a duel with a goal of scoring a point by making a touch with the scoring part of their weapon. It is a combination of strategy, skill, and physical agility.
Yes! Fencing is a controlled sport with strict safety guidelines and protective equipment to ensure participants' safety. Furthermore, all of our coaches ensure that the safety guidelines of the sport are enforced at all times.
Fencing is a great way to improve physical fitness, coordination, and mental focus. It enhances critical thinking, reflexes, and discipline while being an incredibly fun activity. Plus, it’s a great way to meet new friends and be part of a supportive community.
No. Some specific physical attributes can help to accelerate progression, but don't let it discourage you. As you learn how to fence more, physical attributes will matter much less, and it will become a game of strategy vs strategy. Furthermore, each weapon has notably different physical requirements which can accommodate any level of fitness.
With respect to age, Fencing has different age brackets. As you get older, you'll be able to fence in events restricted to only your age-group peers, including all the way up to Veteran World Championships. As such, you'll have a wide range of opportunities from beginner to expert at any age you begin the sport, including very prestigious high-end tournaments if that is of interest to you.
We urge you to consult a medical professional before undertaking a new physical activity. Fencing can be a high strenuous sport and we cannot allow anyone with a known serious physical condition to fence unless approved by a licensed physician. No social media platform or internet forum is going to provide you good advice in this regard.
No prior experience is necessary! Our club welcomes fencers of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced.
Escrime d'Acadie offers a mixed fencing program for both kids and adults, starting from age 9 and up.
We are working on establishing beginner camps and workshops which would include fencers age 7 and up.
You can join by attending one of our Open House sessions every Tuesday starting at 6pm at Thomas Park Rec Center, where you can meet our coaches and learn more about the sport. You can also contact us directly through email, social media outlets, or our website.

Wear comfortable athletic clothing and indoor sneakers. Gym pants or any other comfortable pant which covers the entirety of your leg is mandatory and we recommend indoor court shoes (unless you own fencing shoes).
Proper safety and fencing equipment is provided by the club or you can bring your own. Club allows all members to "rent" practice equipment free of charge. Once you’re hooked on fencing (trust us, you will be!), we can guide you on purchasing your own gear.
Of course! Guests are welcome to watch a session or class. They’ll get a sense of the sport and might even want to join in the future.

Certainly! We are currently in the process of finalizing all of them and once ready they will be posted for viewing and download on our Forms page.

Yes. We’re always looking for volunteers to help with events, fundraising, or coaching assistance. Parents of young fencers are especially welcome to get involved. Spouses, friends, and other family members are also encourage to reach out to our coaching staff to see how they can support our competitive fencers.
We’re more than just a fencing club—we’re a community. We are a non-profit institution built and operated by volunteers and fencing enthusiasts. With experienced coaches, a friendly atmosphere, and programs for all ages, we’re committed to enhancing and expanding lives of all of our members both on and off the strip.
